Howell Wins and Loses in NCAA Tennis
San Diego State’s Linda Howell lost a lengthy match in singles but stayed alive with partner Cynthia MacGregor in doubles at the NCAA Individual Tennis Championships on Wednesday at Oklahoma City.
Howell and MacGregor, fifth seeded, defeated Beverly Bowes and Becky Callan of Texas, 6-2, 6-3, and advanced to today’s quarterfinals against third-seeded Leigh Ann Eldredge and Linda Gates of Stanford. The semifinals will also be played today.
In singles competition, Howell advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to third-seeded Caroline Kuhlman of USC, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4). Howell, fifth seeded, defeated Northeast Louisiana’s Maria Lindstrom, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, earlier Wednesday.
