More California children under age 5 died in drowning accidents than in auto crashes in recent years, the state Department of Developmental Services reported. Robin Brett, department spokeswoman, said drowning took over as the leading killer of young children in the state in 1980. “The last year when auto deaths exceeded deaths by drowning was in 1979,” Brett said. She said 139 children drowned in 1983, while 124 died in motor vehicle accidents.
