Affirming what his staff had earlier announced, San Diego Police Chief Bill Kolender told members of the Rancho Bernardo Community Alert program on Friday that he would not endorse a citizens’ anti-crime force patrolling neighborhood streets.

“If the purpose of the patrol is to have CB (citizens band) radios in cars, and notify Channel 9 (police) that a crime is being committed, then you have my support,” Kolender said.

“But if you have the slightest, vaguest inclination in the back of your head to be the arm of the police, then we’re going to war. If you mark your cars (with patrol signs), then you’re just asking for big trouble.”
