A passenger-freight train, pulled by a wood-burning steam engine, partially derailed on a downhill grade southeast of the capital, killing six passengers and injuring 50, rail officials said.

Delio Dala Fontana, traffic chief of the Central Paraguayan Railroad, said the dead, including two children, were among more than 300 passengers aboard the 30-car train. The dead and injured were all Paraguayans.

The train was about 85 miles southeast of Asuncion when it derailed last week. It originated in the southeastern city of Encarnacion.

Passengers said the locomotive veered off the track along with a mail car and a freight car. Dala Fontana said he did not know the cause of the accident.
