Secretary of Education William J. Bennett said that Congress’ refusal to approve the Administration’s proposed cuts in student aid did not end the controversy. Bennett insisted on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that there is public support for cuts in aid to students, especially in aid to those from affluent families. The Senate has rejected a cap on student grants and loans. However, in its budget resolution, it did accept cuts in the Pell Grant student aid program, which provides up to $1,800 a year for needy students.
