Adoption Guild Tennis Tournament : No. 1 Doubles Team of Briggs and Case Advance

Top-seeded Mike Briggs and Ross Case defeated Tim Cass and Jack Griffin, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, Sunday in a third-round men’s open doubles match in the 25th Adoption Guild Tennis Tournament at the Balboa Bay Racquet Club in Newport Beach.

Briggs and Case, the tournament’s defending champions, will face Steve Schultz and Chris Merrill in the quarterfinals today at the John Wayne Tennis Club in Newport Beach.

Second-seeded Curt Condon and Steve Simon beat Dean Olson and Gary Salazar, 6-4, 6-1, at Palisades Tennis Club. They will play No. 7 Bob Hochstadter and Dick Miller, who beat Chris Chapin and Rob Nelson, 6-3, 7-6.

Fourth-seeded Julian Barham and Darren Yates advanced and will take on Anteater teammates Ken Derr and Art Hernandez in a quarterfinal match today at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

In mixed open doubles action, second-seeded Simon and Susie Warfield advanced.

In Saturday’s women’s open doubles play, No. 1 Jill Beck and Linda Mallory defeated UCI’s Colleen Patton and Lola Trenwith, 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 Gail Glasgow and Warfield beat Karin Barring and Stephanie Rhorer, 6-2, 6-1, and fourth-seeded Gretchen Miller and Karen Rettenmaier defeated Jill Johnson and Wendy Kramm, 6-0, 6-1.
