Fourth-seeded Mats Wilander of Sweden stopped France from scoring three opening-day center-court victories, and defending women’s champion Martina Navratilova breezed through a 40-minute first-round match at the French Open tennis championships Monday.

After Pascale Paradis had upset 15th-seeded Andrea Temesvari of Hungary, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, in women’s singles, Henri Leconte defeated Tim Wilkison in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1.

But a third French player, Thierry Tulasne, lost to Wilander, the 1982 champion, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

Navratilova defeated Pam Teeguarden, 6-1, 6-0. The only game she lost was on her own serve midway through the opening set.

The men’s 15th-seeded player also disappeared soon afterward when Chile’s Hans Gildemeister toppled Brad Gilbert, 7-5, 7-6, 6-4.

Seeded players in the men’s singles to make it through to the second round included No. 5 Andres Gomez of Ecuador, who defeated Pavel Slozil of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Also, No. 8 Eliot Teltscher, who beat Dacio Campos of Brazil, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.

The top three men’s players, John McEnroe, defending champion Ivan Lendl and Jimmy Connors, were idle on opening day.

In the women’s singles, No. 3-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia stopped 13-year-old Mary Joe Fernandez, 6-1, 7-5; No. 13 Kathy Rinaldi defeated Tina Mochizuki, 6-4, 6-0, and 15-year-old Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina ousted Lilian Drescher of Switzerland, 6-2, 6-2.
