Canada, Common Market Reach Accord on Imports
The Common Market and Canada announced a tentative agreement aimed at resolving a dispute over import curbs that Canada put on European beef this year.
Under the arrangement, the Common Market’s import quota for 1985 will be increased to 10,668 metric tons from the 2,700-ton limit originally set by the Canadians, a spokeswoman for the European Community Commission said.
The Common Market’s original quota, part of Canada’s overall import limit of 66,500 tons, was a steep drop from the 23,000 tons of beef that the trade bloc sold in Canada in 1984.
