The Israeli army withdrew from most of the central and western sectors of its security belt in Lebanon today but a large force remains in the east, Israeli radio said.

The military said it could not confirm the radio report of the withdrawal from the western and central areas of the security zone, which stretches along the Lebanese-Israeli border and ranges in depth from three miles to 11 miles.

The radio report said a large force remained in the eastern sector of the security zone in advance of the final Israeli pullback in Lebanon, believed to be scheduled for next week.
