Dial-a-van transportation service will begin here Saturday, after adoption of a 13-month agreement between the City Council and Rancho Palos Verdes, which operates Palos Verdes Transit. The council three months ago informally agreed to join the 2-year-old system and authorized negotiation of a service agreement, which was approved unanimously.
The city will pay $114,756 to cover the cost of 1 1/2 vans and a portion of operating expenses.
Palos Verdes Transit serves Rancho Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills Estates. The addition of Palos Verdes Estates will leave Rolling Hills, a gated community with private streets, the only Palos Verdes Peninsula city not involved in the system. Agreement is expected soon between Los Angeles County and Rancho Palos Verdes for the addition of unincorporated county areas on the Peninsula to the system.
Palos Verdes Transit, which has eight 19-passenger vans, is a call-for-service system that takes riders anywhere within the service area. Cost of a one-way ride is 75 cents, or $1 during peak hours. The cities finance the system through their share of a county transit tax.
