The layoffs will involve 600 workers at the company’s headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif., as well as workers at facilities in Salt Lake City; Danbury, Conn.; Latham, N.Y.; Maynard, Mass., and in Europe, the company said. The company cited a year-old slump in the semiconductor industry for the layoffs. National Semiconductor, which employs about 37,000 people worldwide, said the layoffs at the domestic plants will occur over the next few weeks, while those in Europe will occur during the next few months. The company said “all levels of employees” will be involved. The firm also reported that it is canceling plans for a new plant in Portland, Ore.
