Sponsors of a recently established UC San Diego program that hopes to make San Diego County more attractive to high-technology firms met for the first time Wednesday in La Jolla. The sponsors represent 34 businesses that contributed $100,000 in start-up funding for UCSD’s Program in Technology & Entrepreneurship.

A program spokesperson said that a search for a program director should be completed by late July.

The program’s main goal is to lower barriers between academia and industry, said Dan Pegg, president of the San Diego Economic Development Corp. and a member of the program’s executive committee.

The program will do that in part through a series of sessions geared to the county’s non-technical community, and a series of specialized seminars aimed at national representatives of Fortune 500 companies.

“We also plan to offer practical short courses open to the public,” said Mary L. Walshok, dean of UCSD Extension, which will house and administer the program.
