Retailers Report Mixed Sales

The nation’s major retailers today posted mixed sales results for May compared with a year ago. Sears Roebuck & Co., the nation’s largest retailer, said its sales fell 1.3%, while No. 2 K-mart Corp. reported a gain of 12.2% in its newest stores and a modest 3.2% in stores older than one year.

J.C. Penney Co., ranked third, said its sales fell 1.8%. No. 7, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., said its sales spurted 30% at new stores but only 8% at older ones. F.W. Woolworth Co., No. 8, said its sales rose 4.9%.
