The second California condor to be hatched in captivity this year broke out of its shell at the San Diego Zoo. Named “Malibu,” the chick hatched with very little help from keepers, zoo spokesman Jeff Jouett said. The egg was retrieved from the Ventura County wilderness April 23. Because only one breeding pair of condors remains in the wild, Malibu is known to be a sibling of Kaweah, hatched at the zoo April 11. There are now 18 condors in captivity and nine in the wild, Jouett said.
