Stanton : Judge Refuses Request to Close Adult Bookstore

An adult bookstore and movie arcade that has raised the ire of at least 1,400 Stanton residents can remain open, at least temporarily, because an Orange County Superior Court judge has denied the city’s request for a preliminary injunction.

City Atty. Thomas Allen said City Council members probably will direct him to continue the city’s legal battle against Ginger Cox, owner of Earmark Books & Video Center.

The council had hoped to win a court order temporarily closing the bookstore at 11422 Beach Blvd., which contains sexually explicit movies, books and videos. But in a ruling Allen received Wednesday, Judge Judith M. Ryan denied the city’s request “in light of the serious constitutional questions at issue.”

Cox, who opened the store in March, called the decision “wonderful” and described her business as “a very nice store.”

“The people in the area love our store. We have repeat customers, and it’s starting to bloom,” Cox said. “Couples come in. Families pick up something (a movie) for their child and one for after the kids go to bed.”

In April, the pastor of the St. Polycarp Catholic Church gave Cox a petition with 1,400 names protesting the store.
