Overlapping of Parking Minimums Gets City OK

An ordinance designed to reduce the number of parking spaces required at commercial developments by allowing businesses to share spaces received preliminary City Council approval Monday.

Because parking demands vary at different times of the day, the ordinance could conserve space by allowing multiple-use developments--such as for a restaurant and a dry cleaner--to overlap on parking requirements, according to Doug Clark, the city’s development services director.

In addition, office buildings with more than 100,000 square feet of floor space, currently required to have four parking spaces for every 1,000 square feet, would have that requirement reduced to three spaces.

The ordinance will be up for final council approval July 1, and, if passed, will be effective 30 days later.
