26 UC Demonstrators Arrested

Share

Twenty-six demonstrators chanting “divestment now” were arrested this morning for impeding traffic on Market Street one block from where UC regents opened a two-day session that includes a scheduled Friday vote on whether to withdraw $2.4 billion of UC investment funds in companies doing business in racist South Africa.

The remaining 100 demonstrators were outmanned by the presence of 175 San Francisco and university police officers from eight of the nine UC campuses. The officers fortified the UC Extension Center where the regents are meeting and cut off access to a three-square block neighborhood surrounding the center.
