Hughes won a communications license in Japan.

A Hughes Aircraft subsidiary will jointly operate a satellite communications system under a license issued by the Japan Ministry of Post and Telecommunications. Hughes owns a 30% share of the joint venture, called Japan Communications Satellite Co. Hughes partners are C. Itoh & Co. and Mitsui & Co. A second license went to Mitsubishi Electronics and its partners. Hughes separately announced that it had agreed to sell two satellites and ground equipment to the joint venture for more than $300 million.
