Recliner Chairs Can Kill Children, Agency Warns

Safety experts warned parents Friday of a potential hazard to small children posed by recliner chairs.

Three deaths and two serious injuries have been reported in the last five years involving children playing on recliners, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The agency said that the accidents apparently occurred as the youngsters climbed or played on the leg rests when the chairs were in the reclining position. The children’s heads became trapped between the chair seat and the leg rest when their body weight forced the leg rest down, the agency said.
