A woman in custody on suspicion of burglary escaped from a sheriff’s deputy Sunday while at UCI Medical Center for alleged injuries.

Cecelia Castro, 27, was escorted by a deputy at about 6 p.m. to the medical center in Orange for treatment after she claimed to have hurt her back in a fall at the jail. A short time later she fled from the hospital when her escort turned his back momentarily to help medical personnel with some paper work, said Sheriff’s Lt. Bob Kemmis.

“It appears that she feigned the injuries to get sent out to the medical center to escape,” Kemmis said.

The woman was last seen running toward The City Drive and The City shopping center area. She was wearing gray and blue jail-issued clothing and was described as being 5 feet, 2 inches tall, 115 pounds with shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes.

Castro had been brought to the jail Friday by Garden Grove police officers after being arrested on suspicion of a commercial burglary. Although she has a prior criminal record, Kemmis said she is not considered dangerous. “The suspect has a lengthy history of drug abuse,” he said.

Castro is from the Garden Grove-Anaheim area.
