A plan to convert part of an unused elementary school in South Laguna into low-cost housing for senior citizens moved one step closer to reality this week.

The Laguna Beach Unified School District agreed Wednesday night to sell the Aliso School for $2.7 million, said Clyde Lovelady, the district’s business manager.

The district plans to sell the property to the county, which, in turn, plans to sell half of the site to National Church Residences of Laguna Beach, Lovelady said.

The nonprofit group wants to begin building 71 apartments on the school site in October. The one-bedroom and studio apartments would be rented to people 62 or older with low incomes.

With $3.8 million in federal funds, National Church Residences plans to build new structures and to use some of the existing classrooms for the new senior housing.
