Jewels in the Metropolitan’s Crown

Share

We at Metropolitan Theatres were delighted to read Marilyn Oliver’s article on Golden Era theaters (“10 Movie Theaters That Exemplify an Opulent Architectural Tradition,” June 6) especially--and selfishly--since the Million Dollar, Los Angeles, Orpheum, United Artists and Arlington are among the proudest jewels in the Metropolitan circuit.

Sherrill C. Corwin, who died in 1980, is credited with acquisition of most of these Golden Era theaters, and for holding on to them during the 1950s, a perilous decade for big downtown movie houses in many of the nation’s large cities. Their preservation continues to be an ingrained tradition with Metropolitan.
