Cipher Data Products announced more layoffs.

In dismissing 212 employees, the San Diego-based maker of magnetic tape peripherals cited the continuing downturn in the minicomputer industry. The layoffs follow a work-force cut of 5%, or about 90 employees, last April, and trim Cipher Data’s labor force to about 1,400. Nearly two-thirds of the layoffs will occur in Cipher Data’s Garden Grove plant, while the San Diego facility will absorb about 30%. Other cost-reduction measures include a temporary freeze in wages and salaries.
