Marathon Tiebreaker in Doubles Match
A 26-24 tiebreaker in the fourth set of a men’s doubles match Monday between Jan Gunnarsson and Michael Mortensen and John Frawley and Victor Pecci was the longest in Grand Prix history in singles or doubles.
The previous longest tiebreaker occurred in 1973 at Wimbledon when Bjorn Borg defeated Premjit Lall of India in a first-round match that included a 20-18 tiebreaker.
Borg also lost a marathon tiebreaker, 16-18, to John McEnroe in the 1980 singles final.
Gunnarson from Sweden and Mortensen from Denmark defeated Frawley of Australia and Pecci of Paraguay in the first-round match, 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
