The Planning Commission has approved a plan to convert a former racquetball club into a shopping center.

Torrance-based Trans-Am Development Co., which purchased the empty, 11,000-square-foot club several months ago, wants to develop a mini-mall on the site at 17127 Pioneer Blvd., just north of Artesia Boulevard. City planner Phillip DeLao said the commission approved the project after the owner agreed to redesign the parking layout to increase the number of spaces from 32 to 44.

The project also must be approved by the City Council, which is expected to consider the matter in August.
