Seagram Heiress de Gunzburg Dies of Cancer at 60

Baroness Aileen Bronfman de Gunzburg, heiress to the Seagram fortune, died Monday in Paris of cancer at age 60.

The baroness was the oldest of four children born to Samuel Bronfman, the Canadian who founded Seagram Co. Ltd., and amassed a $400 million fortune before his death in 1971.

Born in Canada, Baroness de Gunzburg studied at Smith College and Columbia University in New York where she earned a master’s degree in history. She was working as a researcher at Time magazine for $60 a week during the years when her share of Seagram income was $200,000 a year.

In 1953 she married Alain de Gunzburg, now Baron De Gunzburg and chairman of the board of G. M. Mumm & Co. of France, one of the world’s leading champagne producers.
