‘Turmoil and Distrust’ at College

“Report Cites Orange Coast College ‘Turmoil and Distrust.’ ”

The above headline recently appeared on the front page of the Orange County section. It could just as accurately have read, “Good Job of Educating Students at Orange Coast College.”

The report of the accreditation team on which the article was based did, in fact, make reference to both issues.

Why did the headline accentuate the negative rather than the positive? Why did the sub-headline warn of the dangers of campus political infighting rather than note the fact that nearly 80% of this year’s graduates plan to transfer to four-year institutions?

The paradox appears to be that your editorial page support of the community colleges is being undercut by your news reporting.
