Indiana Mayor Quits in Plea Bargain, Will Seek Reelection

Mayor Winfield Moses Jr., accused of violations of campaign finance law, resigned today as part of a plea agreement but said he hopes to be back in office in 10 days.

Moses, a Democrat first elected mayor in 1979, told a news conference that he had agreed to plead guilty to three misdemeanor violations and to pay a fine. He then said he will be a candidate for reelection at a party caucus that must be called within 10 days to replace him.

An Allen County grand jury investigation of the 1982 Republican primary election for sheriff resulted in the criminal charges against Moses on Oct. 29. He was charged with three counts of filing false campaign finance reports and one count of conspiracy to file a false campaign finance report in connection with contributions made to the campaign of Boris Jeremenko in the primary.
