Libya, Sudan Concern U.S.
The Reagan Administration expressed “grave concern” today about an announced arms agreement between Sudan, a traditional U.S. ally in Africa, and the Libyan government of Col. Moammar Kadafi.
White House spokesman Larry Speakes commented on a report that the government in Khartoum had announced a military pact under which it would receive logistical support and training from the Libyan regime. (Story, Page 7.)
“We have received repeated assurances that any improvement in Sudan’s relations with Libya would not be at the expense of Sudan’s ties with the United States,” Speakes said.
“The information that we have seen on this agreement between Libya and Sudan is sketchy at best and it is not clear whether it has been ratified by the Sudanese government.
“We are conveying to the appropriate authorities in Khartoum our grave concern at the prospect of a military relationship between Sudan and Libya.”
