A developer’s unpopular plan to close a stretch of San Dieguito Road for three months evaporated yesterday after the developer agreed with Fairbanks Ranch residents to cut the closing to only two weeks.

Under the plan approved by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, the road will be closed beginning today between Calle del Nido and Rancho Diegueno. Drivers will have to use Via de la Valle in and out of Fairbanks Ranch.

The closing is necessary for the reconstruction of San Dieguito Road. The county has required Del Ray Properties and former Chargers owner Eugene Klein to upgrade the road before they build a 64-home subdivision in the Fairbanks Ranch area.

County officials estimate that 3,000 vehicles use the road daily. Estimates of the distance of the detour ranged from 0.2 of a mile to one mile.
