Autologic Also Cuts Staff : Teradyne Will Furlough 350 Hourly Employees

Teradyne Inc. said Tuesday that it will begin one-week layoffs for all 350 hourly workers at its semi-conductor testing plants in Woodland Hills and Agoura Hills.

The Boston-based company said half of the hourly workers will be furloughed next week and the others will go on temporary layoff the following week. Its 400 salaried employees at the plants will not be affected.

Fred Van Veen, a Teradyne spokesman in Boston, said the furloughs stemmed from declining orders.

New Headquarters Planned

Teradyne, which reported sales of $389 million in 1984, makes equipment at its local division that tests integrated circuits used by manufacturers such as Intel, Motorola and National Semiconductor.

Despite the softness in high-tech industries, Van Veen said, Teradyne plans to move its headquarters and manufacturing facilities next year into three new buildings in Agoura Hills as part of a $37-million expansion.

Another local company suffering from the high-technology slowdown, Autologic, which makes automated typesetting equipment, said Tuesday that it laid off 75 employees late last month.

50 Local Layoffs

About 50 people were cut at Autologic’s Newbury Park plant. The other layoffs were at sales offices in Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco and other cities. The cuts leave 400 on the company’s payroll.

Autologic is a subsidiary of New York-based Volt Information Services, a company with annual sales of $413 million that is primarily involved in the temporary-help business and in placing people in technical jobs.

Wallace Lasater, a spokesman for Autologic, said he does not expect more layoffs.
