Transpac Leaders Scrambled in Slow Race
One of the slowest Transpac yacht races in the postwar history of the event loomed as light winds kept the pace slow less than halfway through the 2,225-mile voyage to Honolulu.
The light winds also scrambled the Class A leaders as they spread out, seeking brisker winds.
Leader on elapsed time at the Tuesday morning roll call was Saga, co-skippered by Doug Baker and George Writer, Long Beach Yacht Club. Saga was 763 miles from Los Angeles. Swiftsure III, skippered by Nick Frazee, San Diego Yacht Club, was only a mile astern of Saga.
The previous day’s leaders--John Landon’s Santa Cruz-70, San Diego; Bill Lee’s Santa Cruz-70 Blondie, Santa Cruz, and John Landon’s SC-70, San Diego--logged fewer than 100 miles and fell back to fifth and sixth places, respectively.
