Local News in Brief : Agoura Hills Calls for Radar on Kanan Road

Agoura Hills officials have called for the use of radar to enforce speed laws on accident-plagued Kanan Road, where a collision last month killed three teen-age San Fernando Valley beach-goers and the driver of a speeding stolen car.

The City Council voted, 5 to 0, Wednesday night to ask Los Angeles County supervisors to request state approval for California Highway Patrol officers to use radar on the 13-mile, cross-mountain route.

Councilman Ernest Dynda’s resolution stated that Kanan Road carries “a majority of beach traffic originating from the west San Fernando and Conejo valleys” and that it has been plagued by accidents caused by “erratic and reckless speeding drivers.”

“Many innocent people have been killed or maimed, or suffered unnecessary psychological harm,” the resolution said.

Dynda said the council wants the supervisors to “take whatever action is necessary” to win state approval for radar on the route. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, who patrol a short section of Kanan Road within Agoura Hills city limits, already use the devices, he said.
