A 22-year-old U.S. Marine died Friday, three weeks after being hit by a car driven by another Marine, the coroner’s office said.
David Whitehurst, who was assigned to Camp Pendleton, died in Navy Hospital in San Diego. Whitehurst suffered multiple injuries to his abdomen, arms and legs on June 22 when he was struck crossing a westbound lane of California 78, one-half mile east of Interstate 5 in Oceanside, the coroner’s office said.
A California Highway Patrol spokesman said Greg Franklin Cox, 21, also of Camp Pendleton, was charged with drunk driving in connection with the incident.
