The Palo Alto firm, which makes components for the computer and semiconductor industries, also extended a series of temporary office and plant shutdowns. Earlier, Varian Associates reported plans to cut employment by 1,700 from the current 15,500 and to cut capital spending. Third-quarter results will be negatively affected by one-time costs of the cutbacks and of inventory reserves, but the company expects to report a profit, Chairman Thomas D. Sege said. All wages will be frozen for six months, and executives won’t get any bonuses.
