Three Unions Walk Off Job at Chicago Tribune

Three production unions walked off the job at the Chicago Tribune on Thursday, 10 days after a strike deadline passed without a walkout, newspaper and union spokesmen said.

Management planned to use non-union workers to publish today’s papers, Tribune spokeswoman Ruthellyn Roguski said.

The three unions involved represent mailers, pressmen and typographers.

The main dispute has centered on the unions’ objections to the company’s moving employees from one job to another to adapt to technological changes in the plant, Roguski said.
