A 10-mile subway began service Friday in Pusan, South Korea’s second-largest city. President Chun Doo Hwan helped dedicate the subway and inaugurated the passenger service by taking a ride with city officials and civic leaders. The city plans to put six more miles into service by 1988.

Pusan, a port city with a population of 3 million people, is on the southeastern tip of the Korean peninsula. The South Korean capital of Seoul has the only other subway system in the country--opened in 1974.
