The 8,600-ton Brazilian-registered cargo ship Frota Durban ran aground Saturday off Hong Kong Island and tore open its fuel tanks, fouling miles of popular beaches with oil, authorities said.

Two beaches, including Repulse Bay, were ordered closed after the slick blackened water and sand for three miles along the south side of the island. Thousands of swimmers and sun-bathers were forced to go elsewhere. Ten patrol boats, a helicopter and more than 200 people were mobilized for a cleanup effort.
