MUSIC, POETRY TO MELD IN CLUB SERIES

Members of Southern California’s contemporary music and poetry communities will be featured in a six-week series of performances beginning today at Safari Sam’s in Huntington Beach.

The series, co-sponsored by Safari Sam’s and Atomic Records, opens tonight with readings by Surf Punks member Drew Steele, 18-year-old Los Angeles music writer Shredder and the “adolescent surf punk” music of the Fiends.

Each week’s event will feature thematically linked music and poetry, according to Atomic Records owner C.P. Welch. On July 31, poet Ivan E. Roth, who has been touring the country in recent months with his work “Life Is a Noun,” will be joined by by Chip and Tony Kinman of Rank And File and Orange County cowboy rock group Western Skies.

On Aug. 7, Chris D. of the Divine Horsemen will be the featured reader in a “retrograde avant-garde” program also including performances by the Fibonaccis, Mark Soden’s “Syntho-Lounge Act” and Motor Totemist Guild.
