Race Across AMerica : Secrest Holds On to Cycling Lead After Third Day
Michael Secrest of Flint, Mich., remained in the lead late Tuesday on the third day of the 3,120.2-mile Race Across AMerica bicycle competition.
Secrest passed through Tucumcari, N.M., which is 1,008 miles away from the race’s starting line on the Huntington Beach Pier, approximately 30 miles ahead of his nearest competitor, Jonathon Boyer, of Pebble Beach, Fla. Michael Shermer was third, 60 miles behind Secrest; Lon Haldeman esd fourth, 80 miles behind, while Rob Templin was a distant fifth, 150 miles behind.
Susan Notorangelo was leading the two other women entered in the ultra-marathon race and was in sixth place overall, 160 miles behind Secrest.
Jim Penseyres, a single-amputee Vietnam veteran of San Juan Capistrano, was in 12th place.
Three of the 25 cyclists who started the fourth annual Race Across AMerica, which ends in Atlantic City, quit Tuesday. Robert Benorden dropped out after 238 miles because of heat exhaustion, Murray Wilmerding quit after 466 miles because of an injured foot and William Debreau dropped after 543 miles because of an injured knee.
