Helping Children

Share

Re your article (July 13) on latchkey children causing problems in libraries after school: The solution is obvious. Since the public schools already have the facilities and trained personnel, before-school and after-school activities should be offered at the school. The nominal fee that parents would be charged would help supplement the disgracefully low salaries that our teachers receive. If enough teachers did not volunteer for this duty, then non-working mothers could be hired for the jobs.

As for the libraries, they could also plan activities for the children after school. What better way is there to encourage our children to read and love books? The librarian should be glad that they are there instead of complaining that they are underfoot. Would he prefer them to play pinball?
