SPORTS DIGEST : BRIEFLY : Dallas Cowboys, KWNK Sign Contract

The Dallas Cowboys will be broadcast locally over KWNK-AM (670) of Simi Valley under the terms of a three-year contract.

The contract, which carries an option for an extension, allows the 1,000-watt station to air all 16 regular-season games, plus four preseason contests and any games the Cowboys play in the National Football League playoffs.

KWNK will also carry the “Cowboys Report” Monday through Friday mornings, and “The Tom Landry Report” in the afternoons.

Broadcast feeds will be provided by the Texas State Network and Dallas station KRLD. Dallas talk show host Brad Sham and first-year man Dale Hansen will handle the play-by-play and color commentary, respectively.

The first broadcast will be Aug. 10, when the Cowboys host the Green Bay Packers in a 6 p.m. (PDT) game.

Nunn to Fight Waire at Country Club

Undefeated middleweight Michael Nunn of Ten Goose Boxing in North Hollywood will meet James Waire of Los Angeles in the main event of a six-bout fight card Monday at the Country Club in Reseda.

Nunn has won all six of his professional fights by knockout in the first two rounds. Waire has a record of 19-18-3 and has defeated two previously unbeaten boxers the past year.

Three other Ten Goose fighters--Jon Russell, Manny Olivas and Erik Goossen--will appear on the same card.

Russell (5-0), a lightweight, will meet Robert Garcia (8-4) of Los Angeles. Olivas (2-1-1) is matched against Martin Reyna (2-0) of Los Angeles. Goossen (5-0-1) will fight Mike Cruz (1-1), also from Los Angeles.

Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Wins Babe Ruth Final

J. R. Smith hit two doubles and drove in two runs Thursday to lead the Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Babe Ruth All-Star team to a 5-4 win over Culver City in the championship game of the Babe Ruth Southern California Finals in Culver City. The team is composed of 14- and 15-year-olds.

Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks had beaten Culver City, 4-3, and Westchester, 11-5, to advance to the championship.

Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks advances to the Southwest Regionals in Lodi, Calif., Aug. 3-8.

Kehoe is Second in Motocross Nationals

With three events left, motocross rider Erik Kehoe of Granada Hills is running second in 125cc Nationals competition, while A.J. Whiting of Sherman Oaks is holding sixth. Both riders trail leader Ron Lechien.

In the 250cc Nationals competition, Johnny O’Mara of Simi Valley is third behind leader Jeff Ward. The next Nationals event will be at Binghamton, N.Y., on Sunday.

In Supercross points, O’Mara holds fifth behind leaders Jeff Ward and Broc Glover. Whiting is 14th and Kehoe is 17th. The final Supercross event will be in the Rose Bowl on Aug. 17.
