Farm labor leader Cesar Chavez’s alleged claim that grapes are tainted with dangerous levels of pesticide should be the subject of a criminal investigation, said a spokesman for California grape growers. Bruce Obbink, president of the California Table Grape Commission, contended that Chavez has violated the federal “Tylenol Act,” which makes it a crime to knowingly make false statements about the tainting of a consumer product. Chavez said in Washington that he would welcome a federal inquiry into his allegations.
