The Region : Bradley Calls for Halt in Deportations

Share

Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley called for a temporary halt to deportation of illegal immigrants from El Salvador, saying that those denied political asylum here face “at best an uncertain future and at worst death” in their war-ravaged homeland. Bradley said the Reagan Administration’s policy of denying such asylum must be changed, and urged passage of a bill now pending in Congress that would halt deportations until completion of an investigation into the fate of those already forcibly returned to El Salvador. An INS spokesman said that, in fiscal year 1984, 1,084 Salvadoran refugees in Los Angeles applied for political asylum, but only 123 had their applications approved.
