Jury selection has begun in the retrial of San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock. Superior Court Judge William Todd began questioning 50 prospective jurors, who will be asked how much they already know about the case and whether they have formed opinions against Hedgecock, who is accused of 12 counts of perjury and one count of conspiracy in his 1983 election campaign. The first trial ended in a mistrial, with the jury deadlocked 11 to 1 for conviction. The trial, originally scheduled to begin Aug. 22, got under way three weeks early because defense lawyer Oscar Goodman had a conflict in his schedule.
