Choice for Youth

Recent news stories concerning the Newport Beach youth curfew and the debate as to whether or not teens should be provided entertainment options brought back memories of my own high school days and similar questions of an age-old problem.

I grew up in a town not much larger than Newport Beach, where driving around and hanging out was commonplace. Teens then had many of the same complaints as now heard in Newport. A curfew was not the issue for me, but my parents were concerned about our form of “fun” and wanted to direct us toward different activities.

My parents and several neighbors got together and introduced me and my friends to a variety of entertainment that offered fellowship, fun, new experiences and a chance to meet new friends that I am still involved with today. This opportunity is available right here in Newport Beach.

What I’m talking about has something for everyone, teen and adult alike. That something is the Newport-Costa Mesa YMCA.

The programs at the “Y” include fitness activities, camping, aerobics, swimming, horseback riding and dancing. Some of these programs even occur at night for those teens who enjoy the beach during the day.

I found these programs to be special and, through them, many happy hours can be shared with both old and new friends.

The Newport-Costa Mesa YMCA is here to serve the needs suggested by many of those persons involved in the curfew debate. In fact, several of the council members have supported the YMCA and should be leading the effort to have the city play an active role in promoting the planned addition to this local facility.

Without cost to the city, a bond issue could be offered that could provide the YMCA with the money it needs to complete its new addition and, at the same time, provide the city with an expanded activities center for its youth.

I strongly urge the city to get involved in a positive solution by getting behind this effort.
