The ‘Perlman Plan’ for Orange County’s Political Woes

Share

In recent years, with each ensuing Republican victory in Orange County, The Times has become increasingly shrill and hysterical in its outlook on Republicans and Republicanism. However, a new low was reached in Sunday’s column claiming Orange Countians were “risking their lives” by voting for Republicans.

The columnist’s assertion that in Orange County we should elect more Democrats simply because Democrats control the House of Representatives and both houses of the Legislature could not have been penned better by Tip O’Neil, David Roberti or Willie Brown.

Needless to say, if many people took the Democratic apologists seriously, Republicans would never succeed in changing the status quo. Luckily, largely due to President Reagan’s and Gov. Deukmejian’s leadership, Republican fortunes are on the rise. When the Reagan revolution finally takes hold, it will be because of voters like those in Orange County who led the way.

When Republicans in the state Legislature finally attain a majority, I hope I will have the intellectual honesty to urge their reelection based on performance rather than following The Times’ precedent of paying homage to those in power simply because they are there.
