Chief’s Crown, making his first start ever...
Chief’s Crown, making his first start ever on grass and his first start on any surface since the June 8 Belmont Stakes, crossed the finish line first in the $55,300 Tell Purse at Saratoga in New York, but was disqualified and placed fourth for interference in the stretch.
Taken wide by Angel Cordero Jr. at the top of the stretch behind the front-running Foundation Plan and Exclusive Partner, Chief’s Crown impeded another horse, Equalize, according to the stewards’ ruling. Equalize, who came in fourth, was on the outside of Chief’s Crown.
Exclusive Partner, Explosive Dancer and Equalize were moved up to first, second and third.
Later in the day, Cordero rode Track Barron to victory in the $225,800 Whitney Handicap before 46,064, the second largest crowd in Saratoga’s history. Track Barron ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:47 3/5 and paid $6.80 to win.
