Queen Mum Nearly Overwhelmed by Birthday Throng

LONDON — Over-enthusiastic well-wishers mobbed Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother today and almost trampled her in an effort to join in her 85th birthday celebrations.
The incident occurred as the Queen Mother arrived by helicopter at her London home, Clarence House, after celebrating her birthday Sunday at the Royal country retreat of Sandringham.
The crowd surged through police barriers toward the Queen Mum, shoving aside children waiting to present flowers to her, and for several minutes only two policemen stood between her and the crowd. Then, still waving graciously, she retreated unscathed into the house.
