Boris Becker, the 17-year-old Wimbledon champion, brought more honor to his country Sunday by defeating Aaron Krickstein, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, to help West Germany beat the United States in Davis Cup competition for the first time.

Becker’s victory over the 18-year-old Krickstein before 11,000 at Hamburg gave West Germany a 3-2 triumph.

Earlier Sunday, American Eliot Teltscher had tied the score at 2-all with a 6-4, 2-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hansjoerg Schwaier in a match that lasted 3 hours 45 minutes and was delayed by rain three times for a total of 1 hour 43 minutes.

Becker, a national hero since he became the youngest Wimbledon winner in history last month, needed just 36 minutes to win the first set and 37 to take the second. In the third set, the 17-year-old broke Krickstein three times.

“I think today I played one of my best matches ever,” Becker said. “If McEnroe had been here, we would have had more trouble.

“But he didn’t come, and we beat America.”

West Germany will face Czechoslovakia in the Davis Cup semifinal round in October.

Czechoslovakia swept the reverse singles matches at Guayaquil, Ecuador, with Tomas Smid beating Martin Aguirre, 6-0, 6-1, and Miroslav Mecir defeating Ricardo Ycaza, 7-6, 6-3, for a 5-0 team victory.

Ecuador’s No. 1 player, Andres Gomez, was forced out of the competition Friday with a leg injury. Gomez had to retire when he was leading Ivan Lendl, 5-3.

At Sydney, Australia, Paul McNamee and John Fitzgerald won singles matches to rally Australia to a 3-2 victory over Paraguay.

Australia trailed, 2-1, entering the final day’s play. McNamee tied the series by defeating Victor Pecci, 6-8, 7-5, 6-2, 9-7, and Fitzgerald then beat Francisco Gonzalez, 6-3, 9-7, 7-5 to complete an amazing turnaround for the Australians, who will meet Sweden in the semifinals in October.

Wilander and Amritraj each served 12 aces in the match.
